Once you reach clan tier one you can go talk to any noble of any of the kingdoms and ask to become a mercenary of that kingdom and they will quote you a rate that they will pay per influence, I recommend shopping around until you find one at least 20 or above.
Hunting mystmountains are just a way to get renown, but after you army size has reached 50 it will become worthless, at this point just rely on mercenary payment start following the marshal or quest for Knighthood orders. This mercenary stage will last a long time, be sure to keep switching factions for troop variety.

I was a mercenary in the middle of my contract and I was able to swear vassalage. I was even getting offers of vassalage from Kings. It sounds like it's because you're a female character.
