I usually become a vassal as soon as possible to get the free village then stack up money and units to take a castle and start my own faction, so you should be fine joining as a vassal where your at. I was a mercenary in the middle of my contract and I was able to swear vassalage. I was even getting offers of vassalage from Kings. It sounds like it's because you're a female character.
